TheEllenBee: To understand who I am now, you need to understand who I was as a little girl. Growing up my favorite dream was where I flew like a bird. Although I never ventured higher than the tree tops, I loved playing in the clouds and feeling the wind against my face. Flapping my arms whenever I felt as if I was flying too low, I would stay in the air for hours. I was more than just happy, I was blissfully content. Our house in New Jersey was large and had a great staircase. One day, I was so confident that my dreams were real, that I stood at the top of the staircase, arms outstretched and jumped in the air. I was so certain that I would be able to fly…but instead, I tumbled down the stairs. As I lay at the foot of the staircase my parents, who were both downstairs, ran to me. My father checked to make sure I hadn’t broken any bones, while my mother held me tight, trying to staunch my sobbing. I never told them that I wasn’t crying because I was hurt. I was crying because I couldn’t fly. I still dream at night, but it is very, very rare that I dream that I can fly. But when I do I still wake wondering if I can fly.
